Getting to Umaya

Umaya is located on the Placencia Peninsula, a 16 mile strip of sandy beach situated between a saltwater lagoon and the Caribbean sea. Getting to Belize is easy. There are several airlines that fly direct from the United States and Canada. All these flights land at the Belize International Airport (Phillip Goldson International Airport) which is a 20-minute drive from Belize City. There are also connecting flights from Guatemala and Cancun, Mexico.

Once you’ve arrived to Belize International Airport (BZE), the easiest way to get here is to take a short local flight to Placencia Airport (PLJ). The flight duration is about 30 minutes. There are two local airlines, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Placencia Airport pick up is complimentary and the resort is a 10 minute drive from the airport.

By Ground Transfer

The Resort can organise a pick up from Belize City International Airport for $300USD one way and can carry up to 10 people. The journey takes 3.5 hours. 


There is a nationwide network of public buses that will get you to Placencia. From the main bus station in Belize City, the journey to Placencia takes around five hours. The price is around $15 for a one-way journey, but be aware that buses are often quite crowded.


You can hire a car from Belize City. Car rental places are not as abundant in Belize as other countries so picking up in Belize City and dropping off in Placencia is not an option. There are many car rental places in Placencia. 

Travelling During Covid

Anyone arriving in Belize needs to present a negative Covid-19 test, taken within 72 hours of arrival. Alternatively, for USD$50 you can take a test upon arrival with the results given within an hour. You do not need to wait at the airport for the result - they will call you in the event that the result is positive and you have to quarantine where you are staying. Visitors must show a booking at a gold standard hotel, which Umaya is.

As of May 2020, those coming from Europe are subject to a ban limiting travel through the USA. Therefore we recommend flying to Cancun and taking a plane from Cancun to Belize. This information is current as of July 2021, however, we are monitoring the situation to find the best route.

Visas

Tourists can stay in Belize up to 1 month without the need for a visa. At the end of each month the visa can be renewed at a nearby office for a minimal fee. For those looking for longer stays, please get in touch and we’ll talk you through options.
